Exploring Different Styles of Dance

The art of dance allows people to express themselves in a beautiful way and brings people together through movement and emotion. One reason why dance is so meaningful to so many people and cultures is because of the variety and diversity of dance styles. As people we are all unique and express ourselves in different ways, and the wide variety of types of dance allows this art form to speak to many different people.

Here are some different styles of dance you can find across the world:

Ballet

Ballet is the foundation of all dance forms. It is a classical dance form demanding grace and precision. Employing formalized steps and gestures set in intricate, flowing patterns, ballet creates expression through smooth and elegant movement. Ballet is a very classical style of dance.

Jazz

Jazz is a sharp, energetic, and fun style of dance. At the same time, it’s also precise and founded on a series of movements in straight lines.

Contemporary

Contemporary blends elements of multiple dance styles and lets dancers express their emotions through movements and breath. It is a fusion of ballet, jazz, and modern, bringing classical and more interpretive styles together to create a completely unique kind of dance.

Tap

Tap is a form of dance characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. It’s upbeat, musical, and rhythmic, and is unique because it allows dancers to create music as they dance rather than simply following along to a tune.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop is a vibrant form of dance that combines a variety of freestyle movements. It is an energetic street dance influenced by a variety of other dance styles. Through its three main styles of popping, locking, and breaking, hip-hop dance has evolved into one of the most popular and influential styles of dance.

Modern

Modern is a grounded style of dance that focuses on free interpretations derived from inner emotions. It is a freeform and fluid kind of dance that is more natural for the body and can be highly personalized from dancer to dancer.
